Honoring Direct Support Providers: Heroes of the ID/DD Community

  • Date: September 13, 2024

Direct Support Providers (DSPs) are the unsung heroes of the intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) community. These dedicated individuals provide daily care and support, often in challenging circumstances. DSPs dont just offer assistance with day-to-day tasks—they form the backbone of emotional and psychological support for individuals with ID/DD, helping them navigate through life with dignity, independence, and fulfillment.

The pandemic brought the role of DSPs into sharp focus. While most of the world went into lockdown, DSPs continued to show up for work, often in extremely challenging conditions. Many cared for individuals in quarantine, putting themselves at personal risk while continuing to provide essential services. In many cases, DSPs became the only link between isolated individuals and the outside world, providing comfort and continuity in an otherwise chaotic time.

At a recent event hosted by Capital Regional RX, Erik Geizer, CEO of The ARC of New York, emphasized the extraordinary work of DSPs and their vital contribution to public health during the pandemic. Despite the risks, DSPs continued to show up, providing essential care to individuals with ID/DD and saving countless lives. Their work isnt just a job—its a calling, one that requires immense dedication, compassion, and resilience.

As we reflect on their dedication, its important to continue advocating for better wages, benefits, and working conditions for DSPs. Many are underpaid, despite the critical nature of their work. This advocacy doesnt just ensure fair compensation; its about recognizing the value they bring to society and the individuals they support. Organizations like The ARC of New York and Hudson Regional LTC Pharmacy are committed to pushing for the change that DSPs deserve, ensuring they continue to be the heroes our communities need.
